Maine South Cleared of Rumors that Players Tested Positive for Steriods

by Jeff Fisher
Illinois HIgh School Football Huddle

At a very early age, our parents teach us about lying and starting rumors.

Today, the Illinois High School Association has stopped a vicious lie about steriod use by some Maine South's football players. The Hawks have won back-to-back 8A state titles, and enter 2010 with a 28 game win streak.

It started yesterday when the Chicago Tribune reported that Maine South coach Dave Inserra started hearing rumors that some of his players failed state-mandated drug tests right after their championship victory.

Today, the IHSA said, the rumor was just that...a rumor. Below is the IHSA's response from its website.

The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) has compiled the results of its Performance-Enhancing Drug Testing Program for the fall of 2009. There were zero positive test results among the 141 tests conducted by the Association during the fall sports seasons, which included girls swimming & diving, boys soccer and football. Of the 141 student-athletes tested, 117 student-athletes were tested for anabolic steroids and 24 student-athletes were tested for stimulants.

“We had intended to release the results of our fall drug testing at a later date,” said IHSA Executive Director Marty Hickman, “but felt compelled to distribute it immediately to address a proliferation of false and damaging rumors about the test results of Class 8A football state champion Maine South. It is truly unfortunate that these rumors have persisted. It is our hope that these groundless accusations will not diminish the outstanding accomplishments of Maine South High School, its football coaching staff and its players.”

The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that Proviso West wide receiver Kyle Prater is expected to take a trip to California next week to possibly enroll at USC.

Prater had indicated that he was reconsidering his verbal commitment after Pete Carroll announced he was leaving the Trojans to the Seattle Seahawks. According to the newspaper, USC's hiring of Lane Kiffin may keep Prater in SoCal.

Morris HS Head Football Coach Searches for Successor

by Jeff Fisher
Illinois High School Football Huddle

After stepping down as Morris' head football coach, George Dergo, who resigned to focus on his job as athletic director, must now find his replacement.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Dergo, who led the Redskins to the 2006 6A title and a runner-up finish in '07, hopes to have a new head coach by March. Dergo was 45-17 in five seasons with Morris.

North Chicago Football Program Suspended After Fight

by Jeff Fisher
Illinois High School Football Huddle

North Chicago will not be playing its scheduled game with Vernon Hills tomorrow night. Today, the Illinois High School Athletic Association suspended all levels of the football program because of a fight that broke-out in last Friday's game against Simeon.

The game was called after just seven minutes and Simeon leading 21-0; Simeon was declared the winner.

According to a news release on the IHSA website, the North Chicago teams will be allowed to continue to practice, but will forfeit tomorrow night's Vernon Hills game. North Chicago administration officials will meet with the IHSA next week to discuss the remainder of the 2009 season.

“There is no place in high school athletics for the actions that occurred at the football contest between North Chicago and Simeon,” said Marty Hickman, Executive Director of the Illinois High School Athletic Association “Sportsmanship is at the forefront of the IHSA’s mission and this is a very serious incident that necessitated serious consequences.”

“Hopefully, this troubling incident will serve as a teachable moment for both of these schools, as well as all the other student-athletes, coaches and fans who enjoy high school athletics in Illinois,” added Hickman. “We can’t change what took place last week, but those who enjoy the privilege of participating in interscholastic activities must understand they are obligated to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the ideals of good sportsmanship.”

Simeon will be allowed to continue its season, however, several players involved in the incident will be disciplined, according to the news release.

North Chicago is coached by former Chicago Bear Glen Kozlowski.
